AI

Dear classmate. I dishearteningly beg to disagree. I approach the subject as a blue collared American laborer living paycheck to paycheck. AI will replace tasks and consequently - jobs. Ask any Luddite, Telephone Operator or Elevator operator if you can still find one. When I first came to this country, I had my hands dirty working on Cash recyclers at Walmart and later their self-checkout counters as a contractor for NCR. The writer’s union and artists who just last year completed their strike attest to the reality that AI is an existential threat to their livelihood. Andrew Yang’s book “War on Normal People” succinctly serves as an allegory. I wish there was an easy answer to this debacle. Maybe one day as Ida Auken’s essay during the World Economic Forum said you'll own nothing and be happy. Perhaps the wealth generated by robotics and AI can provide a guaranteed income. Much like how cars replaced the horse and buggy, humanity’s only hope is that the rise of AI will create new opportunities that will transcend old roles it will render obsolete.
